Capitalism. Feminism. Art.

Join us to celebrate the Scottish launch of Feminism. Art. Capitalism. (Pluto Press) with the author, Angela Dimitrakaki. Championing Marxist feminism and focusing on the less obvious layers of capitalist hegemony, the book considers the exploitation of enthusiasm in art’s promise of a self-determined subject, cases of ideological capture, the question of class, the historical context and impact of postmodernism, and modernity’s attachment to technology as salvation and magic. In thinking about the contradictions that feminism faces in capital’s artscapes, the book argues for seeing feminism as a complex political effort rather than a success story of contemporary art.

For this event Angela will be in conversation with art historian Victoria Horne who specialises in the cultural and intellectual history of Anglo-American feminism. Copies of the book will be available at a reduced price.

Angela Dimitrakaki is Professor of Contemporary Art History and Theory at the University of Edinburgh. Victoria Horne is Assistant Professor at the School of Design Arts and Creative Industries, Northumbria University.
